An Exciting Fundraising Opportunity for the Her Centre!
Her Centre has won ‘The Big Give and Rosa’ funding that will match any donations we raise up to £25,000. This is for one week from 8th March 2022.
Her Centre is a charity based in Greenwich providing advice and advocacy work for women who have or are experiencing domestic or sexual violence and abuse. Women who experience abuse face a multitude of barriers to receiving the help and support they need.
The Her Centre provides a holistic approach in delivering services around crisis intervention, victim engagement and practical support. As well as our crisis service, our follow up support incudes:
- Basic English Language classes,
- Confidence Building and Parenting courses
- Paid work placement scheme
- Peer lead support groups
- One to one counselling provided by our partner counselling service.
Her Centre provides free basic English classes to help women learn the language, develop their confidence, seek gainful employment, and access key services including ours. These classes help women build relationships and connect with other women creating support networks across communities.
One of the real challenges for women new to the country is that many have little or no English. As a result, they face problems to get work, struggle to support their children with school/health issues, lack access to services and can be trapped in abusive relationships as they don’t know where to get help.
Many attending our English classes take up our work placement programme or enrol in other development classes we provide.
We have had great successes with these classes over the last 5 years, with 264 women attending. However, we have now run out of funds to continue to provide this important service to our users. If we are unable to raise the necessary funds, we will have to discontinue this service from April.
This is why we need your donation.
With your support, we are hoping to raise enough funds to continue classes and to keep an effective outreach post providing drop-in advice across the borough to help us reach more women from new communities. Already our outreach picks up far more diverse women than referrals from police and children’s services.
